TWO PHD STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ, GLORIA DOMÍNGUEZ RODRÍGUEZ AND MAIDER GREÑO OCÁRIZ, PERFORM SCIENTIFIC DISSEMINATION WORKSHOPS IN SECONDARY EDUCATION INSTITUTES

On the 3rd of May and 13th of June, two PhD students from the (Micro)-Separation Techniques research group of the University of Alcalá (UAH) and members of the AVANSECAL-II-CM program (Ref. S2018/BAA-4393), Gloria Domínguez and Maider Greño, went to different secondary education institutes, IES Campiña Alta (El Casar, Guadalajara) and IES Cardenal Cisneros (Alcalá de Henares), to give a global vision of the research lines and activities developed within the programe AVANSECAL-II-CM, entitled “Integrated Strategies for the Improvement of Food Quality, Safety and Functionality. Towards a healthy diet”. Moreover, they performed a scientific dissemination food workshop entitle “Playing with chemistry”.

The best method to bring science to young high school students in a fun and entertaining way is through experimentation. From the AVANSECAL-II-CM program, the PhD students from the University of Alcalá make students concern about food quality and safety, as well as raising awareness about the revaluation of waste from the agri-food industry. In short, raise interest for food chemistry through different experiments with purple cabbage juice, eggs, cola and milk, among others. The workshop is based on the participation of youth, stimulating logical reasoning through observation to draw their own conclusions and reinforce the knowledge acquired in class.
